Most people will have heard of treatments like teeth whitening and dental braces etc, but a term that has increasingly come into use is the ‘smile makeover’. As some of you might deduce from the name, it is designed to improve the smile of anyone that undergoes this process. Unlike, say teeth whitening though, it doesn’t mean a specific treatment but consists of a potentially multi treatment plan that is designed individually to improve your own specific smile issues.
A smile makeover can be a single treatment, or a number of different treatments. This will depend on your needs and requirements. In today’s blog, we will take a look at some of the treatments that might be offered, depending on the outcome of your consultation at our Staines dental clinic.
The process starts with an initial consultation with the dentist. This enables us to understand what it is that you hope to achieve. We will carry out an assessment of your overall oral health and discuss the possibilities of what can be achieved. This might depend on the condition of your teeth and also your own budget, although we do have payment plans available to help you to spread the cost of any payments.
Before we start on any cosmetic improvements to your teeth, it will be necessary to treat any current problems. There is little point in having a straight white smile if underlying problems like decay and gum disease exist, for example.
Once an agreed treatment plan is in place, we can begin.
At the Clarence Dental Practice, we provide a range of treatments that might be used as part of your personalised smile makeover. The following are some of the most likely ones that might be used, depending on your needs.
There are many people who have crooked and uneven teeth in the UK, often due to the reluctance to wear braces. This is usually due to the perception that braces look like they used to do twenty years ago, where highly visible wiring was used to straighten teeth. Cosmetic dentistry has seen many improvements over the years with modern discreet orthodontics such as Invisalign, now available to straighten teeth. These do not use any wiring but instead use a progressive series of transparent trays that fit over your teeth and are almost invisible to those around you.
If you are missing a tooth, or teeth, dentures do still offer some benefits but, in our opinion, nothing like as many as teeth implants do. This treatment provides you not only with the visible crown part of a tooth, but the root also. Although this may not seem important from an aesthetic point of view as the root is hidden, it is this part which provides you with a very strong and stable replacement tooth that is as close to a natural tooth as is currently possible.
This is especially effective for minor issues with your teeth such as the restoration of teeth with tiny chips in them. It can also help to mask cracks in the teeth and repair worn edges. In some instances, it may even be used to close small gaps between the teeth.
The best well known cosmetic treatment and also the most popular. This is often the treatment that provides the most obvious results. This non-invasive procedure is carried out by the cosmetic dentist at our Staines practice and will lighten your teeth by several shades. The level of whiteness can be adjusted, and patients that require more subtle improvements can have this, rather than a more dramatic change in colour. Generally, this treatment works best on mild to moderate discolouration.
These are sometimes described as being like ‘false fingernails for the teeth’. This is rather a crude description but does have some similarities. Veneers are fine layers of porcelain that are shaped to fit the size and style of your own teeth. In most cases, this will require an equivalent thickness of tooth enamel being removed from the front of your teeth first. The veneers are then attached using a strong specialist adhesive before being trimmed and polished to give you a whiter and natural looking smile. Veneers can be used on more badly stained teeth but also to correct issues such as minor chips, cracks or where the tooth enamel is eroded.
Naturally, it is impossible to gauge the cost of this treatment without a consultation. It might be that you simply require a highly affordable tooth whitening treatment, but if you have a missing tooth as well, then implants might be needed. The best place to start your smile makeover journey is to arrange your ‘no obligation’ initial consultation where we can have an honest discussion with you about what you want, what can be done and the cost, including possible payment plans to help you.
